Dr Thomas McCord

Dr. McCord has been a practicing clinical psychologist in the Lafayette area since 1992. He sees a wide variety of adult patients and considers himself a generalist. He has experience in treating depression, anxiety, and personal trauma. He has worked with athletes, first responders, law-enforcement officials, Down syndrome patients, and autistic patients. His patients have ranged in age from their twenties to their seventies, and span all educational levels.

Dr. McCord has decades of experience conducting psychological evaluations with both intellectual and personality testing and currently limits this part of his practice to adult referrals from fellow therapists (no forensic, worker’s comp, child custody evaluations).

Of his therapy style, Dr. McCord has this to say:

“My therapeutic approach is eclectic, primarily because it is patient-centered. My patients come to my door as individuals, as people who find themselves in various kinds of discomfort, conflict, and pain. As a therapist, I try to meet them where they are, and to create an accepting atmosphere where they can fully feel and express themselves. Together, we’ll make space for silence, for humor, for whatever helps us on the particular path to feeling better, which varies as much as the individuals themselves. Some people arrive with concerns that we can work on with forms of cognitive therapy, while others require a more in-depth course of therapy. In my office, the individual is the focus, and not a particular form of therapy. To borrow an analogy from a colleague of mine in the dentistry field, “A fresh wound usually requires more than a band aid, but not every toothache merits a root canal.

More than once, my patients have told me that I am not like what they thought a psychologist would be like. That I seem more like “just a regular guy.” I consider this a compliment of the highest order.”
